Could you help us keep Cheltenham’s history thriving?
Our Treasurer is planning to retire from the role in 2027, and we are looking for someone who would enjoy becoming part of the team to help us continue our work of preserving and promoting Cheltenham’s history.
With more than 400 members, the Society is an established registered charity. We organise talks and events, produce publications, support research and take part in a range of local history projects.
What would the role involve?
Working as part of the leadership team, you would be responsible for our financial administration, including:
• maintaining financial records and the cashbook
• monitoring the Society’s financial position and recording its assets
• preparing financial reports, budgets and annual accounts
• managing banking and authorised payments
• administering Gift Aid and submitting claims
• helping to ensure that the Society meets its financial and Charity Commission requirements
• assisting with grant applications
• presenting the annual accounts at the AGM
As a member of the Committee you could also contribute to the Society’s wider activities.
Could this be you?
You don’t have to be a qualified accountant. We are looking for someone who is numerate, organised and reliable, with sufficient financial experience to take responsibility for the Society’s accounts and financial administration.
Experience of bookkeeping, accounting, charity finances or Gift Aid would be useful, but above all we are looking for someone who is comfortable working with figures and would enjoy putting their skills to good use.
You’ll have support
Taking on a Treasurer’s role can sound a bit daunting, but you won’t be expected to do it alone.
Our retiring Treasurer will provide a full handover and guidance on the Society’s existing financial arrangements and procedures. You’ll also be working alongside the other Committee members, who will be there to provide support and share the wider responsibilities of running the Society.
An opportunity to make a difference
This is a chance to use your skills in a practical and rewarding way, while becoming part of a group of people who care about Cheltenham and its history.
If you think you might be interested, we’d be very pleased to hear from you.
For an informal, friendly, no-obligation conversation about the role, please speak to any Committee member, or contact Stuart Manton via the Society’s Contact page.
Alternatively, you may know someone with the right qualities who you feel would be interested in this role.
Please do get in touch.
